This 7 week introduction course aims to introduce learners to simple and basic skills in British Sign Language (BSL) to enable them to communicate with Deaf people on everyday topics and is suitable for learners who have no previous experience of British Sign Language, and wish to acquire some simple basic language skills for the purpose of holding simple communication with Deaf people in everyday situations.  All you need is your enthusiasm about learning and practising a new language.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Meeting people and exchanging common courtesies and information
  • Work, school and or college descriptions and activities
  • Fingerspelling
  • Using basic numbering systems
  • Using the calendar and telling the time
  • The weather
  • Simple day-to-day activities of self and others
  • Personal pronouns and possessives
  • Basic timeframes
  • Simple grammatical and signing structures
